The moment that started it all
I was outside a bagel shop when I saw a clearly autistic girl sitting alone on the cold ground. No one was around her. She was having an episode — but she was content, even happy, just sitting there by herself.
Fifteen minutes went by. A van pulled up with special needs workers to come and assist her. She was resisting, so they started to yell at her, drag her, and push her.
There was a crowd of people all watching — including me — and not doing anything. They eventually got her in the van and left.
That moment opened my eyes to how deeply misunderstood this girl was. Even the workers — the people whose job it was to help her — didn't know how to handle that situation with compassion.
I couldn't stop thinking about her. About her parents. About how many families are navigating this world without the support and understanding they deserve.
